What is Stamp Duty and will I have to pay it?

This is a Government tax levied on residential property payable by the purchaser on completion of contracts. How much deposit will I need to pay to secure the property?

Usually between 5 and 10% of the purchase price. This is the amount paid by the purchaser to the vendor via the solicitors upon exchange of contracts. As with all professions, fees can vary quite significantly dependent upon the area in which you are selling and the competitiveness of the local agent. It is of course worth bearing in mind that "cheap" is not necessarily the best option. As a rough guide you should expect to pay no more than 3% of the selling price plus VAT.
